Elkan Abramowitz
Elkan Abramowitz is an attorney/partner at Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello PC, New York, New York. As a leading white-collar criminal defense attorney, he has extensive experience in handling civil and criminal matters in state and federal court for individual and corporate clients. Thus far, Mr. Abramowitz has represented numerous high-profile clients who have fallen into high-stakes personal and professional crises both in and outside the courtroom. In addition to his white-collar criminal defense practice, he litigates trial, appellate, civil litigation, securities litigation, and professional representations-related matters. In preparation for his career, Mr. Abramowitz earned his Bachelor of Arts from Brown University. Subsequently, he received his Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law. At law school, he was an Editor of Law Review and a Pomeroy Scholar. Admitted to practice in New York, Mr. Abramowitz represents clients before the United States District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Throughout his illustrious career, he has held numerous noteworthy positions. In 1979, Mr. Abramowitz was a principal at a predecessor firm to Morvillo Abramowitz. He was appointed as Special Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Investigation for the City of New York in 1990 to investigate a stock transfer made by Mayor David Dinkins to his son. He also served as Counsel to the Special Master in the garment center antitrust case in 1992, as Assistant Deputy Mayor for the City of New York, as a Special Counsel to the Select Committee on Crime for the U.S. House of Representatives, and as the Chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
As an expert, Mr. Abramowitz has written numerous articles, books, and journals in his field. He is a co-author of Corporate Sentencing Under the Federal Guidelines, a chapter in the treatise White Collar Crime: Business and Regulatory Offenses, and the White Collar Crime column in the New York Law Journal. A Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a former Director of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers, Mr. Abramowitz is a member of the New York State and American Bar Associations, the New York City Bar Association (past member of the Criminal Law, Federal Courts, Ethics, and Judiciary Committees), and the Federal Bar Council. He has received numerous awards and accolades. Mr. Abramowitz is the recipient of the Milton S. Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy presented by the Office of the Appellate Defender, the New York Council of Defense Lawyers’ Norman S. Ostrow Award for the defense of liberty and the preservation of individual rights, the New York Law Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Police Athletic League’s Robert M. Morgenthau Award.
