William Drennen

William Whelan Drennen is an associate attorney with Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft LLP, Charlotte, North Carolina. He also serves as a private tutor with Varsity Tutors. Initially desiring a career in finance and inspired by his father, who worked in the finance industry, Mr. Drennen obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Trinity College. As an undergraduate student, Mr. Drennen interned at Goldman Sachs, where he was assigned to work on the mortgage security trading and sales desks. During his internship, he discovered his knack and desire for the legal side of finance. Following his passion, Mr. Drennen earned his Juris Doctor from Washington University in St. Louis in 2018. As an undergraduate, Mr. Drennen became a squash professional at Chelsea Piers, where he coached several local high school squash teams and numerous U.S. juniors. He also served as a summer associate with MHR Lewis and researched and drafted memorandums involving international tax treaties between the United States and several South American countries for wealth structuring. In 2018, Mr. Drennen joined the firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft LLP, one of the oldest law firms in the country, in its Charlotte office, as a law clerk. Since becoming an associate attorney of the firm, Mr. Drennen has represented investment banks and other financial institutions in CLOs, commercial lending transactions, and warehouse facilities. Attributing his success to his mentors, such as Nathan Spanheimer and Joe Beach, partners at the firm, Mr. Drennen is grateful for the guidance of his colleagues Nick Ortega and Adam Risell. Passionate about the legal field, he aims to conduct pro-bono work with Cataloger Veterans Network and carve out a place for himself with Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft, where he can influence the connection and culture of the firm.
